WiiFitAt the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco last Wednesday, Nintendo announced a new game for its leading console: Wii Fit. What? A console which already battles sedentary gaming is adding a product that will improve your health too?

Wii Fit comes bundled with a wireless Balance Board “controller” with which you can stretch, exercise and even try out ya ya ya ya-Yoga! WiiFit includes mini-games that test your hand eye coordination with Soccer-related challenges, Marbles and Down-Hill skiing. Additionally, it adds the Wii Fit channel to the already large list of channels on the Wii Conole. The channel allows users to check in and track fitness progress by weight and body mass index (also known as BMI).

Although originally rumored to come out in January this year, WiiFit will be available May 19th. In addition to WiiFit, Nintendo announced WiiWare–a digital distribution game service set to launch May 12th allowing gamers to download new games directly to the console–some of which are said to include episodic content. This is different than the Virtual Console which has existed since its incept.

Recipe for success: one part Pole Position, one part Bejeweled , one part Dance Dance Revolution, your MP3/CD collection then mix well and release on Steam as Audiosurf. I’ve been playing it constantly for about almost a week and have to say that I have not played a simple game that is quite this addictive in a long time.

The game play really is a mash-up of all of the influences I mentioned. You start by selecting a “Character” from a selection of 14 of widely varying types, then select a music track (MP3, AAC (unprotected), WMA (unprotected), OGG, Flac, or Audio CD) to generate the “track” that you will be playing on. The game analyzes the music file that you selected and the track that is built is based on the instrumentation, tempo, and volume of the music. Then you use the character selected to play the track in a way that is strongly reminiscent of Pole Position except in three dimensions with some pretty trippy graphics. The Bejeweled like aspects are a bit more difficult to describe accurately and you’re better off downloading the free demo and taking a few rides to see how you like it.

At $10 it’s well worth the purchase especially since it also includes the Orange Box soundtrack which will set you back about the same amount from most legal sources. To support such inventive game design it’s worth a whole lot more.

C64 Screenshot According to Nintendo Power and Gamasutra, the Nintendo Wii will feature Commodore 64 games in its Virtual Console. If you’re not familiar with the virtual console it’s the feature in which you can download retro games from the internet directly to your Wii console. Currently the lineup includes a plethora titles from the original NES, SNES, N64, TurboGrafx 16, Neo Geo and Sega. Adding the Commodore 64 games–a move that clearly tightens their lead in the retro department for consoles–will only add to the joy that is the Wii.

One of my favorite platformers of all time is Pac-In-Time. It was made for the Macintosh and the PC. At one time they had planned a Sega Game Gear port of the game. It was supposed to be cooler with better graphics and whatnot. I never had a gamegear and probably never will. A while back Retro Gamer Magazine gave away a CD with some rare footage of the game (as well as Combat II and one other lost game). I uploaded it to YouTube and here it is:
