In an effort to cut costs, Sega has announced plans to close about one quarter of their arcades in Japan and trim their game-development plans.

moneyFirst off Cloudscout reported this morning that there was a radio ad for http://halfoffmn.com/ that had Play N’ Trade in it.  What is it?  Well, for a mere $25 (plus $3 shipping) you will receive a gift card good for $50 worth of Video Games at Play N’ Trade Bloomington.  This is a great deal–especially for retro collectors.  Get yours now.  I was the first to sign up for the deal so there are 99 left. Get yours now!

Second, I received a call from the store manager Tyler two days ago (Sorry I’m late in reporting) and there are not 1 but 2 events that people here may be interested in checking out:

  • Saturday 7th, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. there will be a Nintendo 64 GoldenEye tournament.  The cost is $5 to enter the tournament, there will be prizes and glory a plenty.
  • Friday 13th, 2009 5:00 p.m.: PnT Bloomington is holding their first ever Fighting Tournament.  This one will be multiple systems including (but not limited to) SNES:  Street Fighter II,  Sega Genesis: Mortal Kombat III, PS1: Marvel Vs. Capcom, PS2: Capcom vs. SNK, PS3: Soul Calibur IV, Wii: Smash Bros, NES and Xbox360 will also feature fighting tournaments.

So, I bought a couple of stools for my ManCave Arcade… or as I have just begun referring to it:  The Mancade!

barstool

I landed two of them off of Craigslist for $40.  They retail at Target for $59.99 + tax ($63.89).  They work great for the Ms. Pac-Man and the homemade console arcade cabinet.

Yes, powerful home consoles and online multi-player have severely crippled the arcade business in the U.S., however, we do still get a few new titles once in a while. This latest one is from old reliable GlobalVR (the company that brought us the Need For Speed arcade titles), and is based on the Justice League license. The game play looks fun, and seems to be a pretty straight forward arcade brawler, which I’m of the opinion that we always need more of. The only bummer to me is that they seem to have passed on the opportunity for solid 4 player action, thus keeping it out of the league of Gauntlet and the legendary (to me) TMNT games. Graphically, it’s not going to win any awards, but the cell-shading looks passable, and fits the source material very well. Now begins the waiting game to see if this machine shows up somewhere in the metro. Hit the gallery for some screenshots, and a look at the deluxe cabinet (sporting a rather large hi-def monitor).
