Big WillyAt last the next sequel in the Destroy All Humans series has been unleashed! To be redundant, it’s called: Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed! Yes, that’s right, kids. As of today you can order this tasty sequel for the PSP and the Wii (exclusively) and delight in the discontinuation of the human race.

You can again unleash destruction in an open world setting! But this time you can do it in 3 ways: on foot as Crypto, in the air (UFO) or in the Big Willy Mech! There are 5 different environments to explore: Harbor City, Fairfield, Vietnmahl, Fantasy Island & Antarctica.

As predicted by members of this site, the game takes place in the early 70s. Crypto and Pox have started a fast food restaurant and their mascot is a large boy called “Willy” and the secret recipe includes Soylent Green! OK, it’s not actually called Soylent Green as far as I can tell. However! The reference indicates that the recipe does call for people… or at least their flesh. And a new arch-nemesis has been created called: Colonel Kluckin. The Colonel finds out their secret recipe and Pox makes a Furon war machine disguised as a giant robot version of Big Willy (the aforementioned mascot of the restaurant).

There is another sequel already in the works entitled: Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon which will be set in the late 70s and is exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PS3. It’s release date is Mid-June of this year.

Last October Electronic Arts out of Redwood, CA purchased two reputable game companies putting their company in the lead on the NY Stock Exchange. Recently that lead has waned with competition from Take-Two Interactive, another large player in the video gaming world. You might have heard of them. Under their RockStar development group they produce a little game called: Grand Theft Auto.

EA has just bid Two Billion dollars to purchase this rival.

Last year’s October purchase of BioWare and Pandemic Studios added the following games to EA’s arsenal:

From BioWare:

  • Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
  • Dragon Age
  • Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO)
  • New Next Gen Game
  • LucasArts/BioWare Interactive Product
  • Neverwinter Nights Series
  • Mass Effect
  • Jade Empire
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Baldur’s Gate Series
  • MDK2 Series
  • Shattered Steel

From Pandemic:

  • Full Spectrum Warrior™
  • Star Wars: Clone Wars
  • Triple Play 2002
  • Army Men RTS
  • Dark Reign 2
  • Battlezone II
  • Saboteur
  • Mercenaries Series
  • Destroy All Humans Series
  • Full Spectrum Warrior Series
  • Star Wars Battlefront Series

If the $2,000,000,000 take over were to go through, EA would have controlling stock in games like:

  • The Manhunt Series
  • Bully
  • Actually, Rockstar Games alone account for:
    • Table Tennis
    • Midnight Club Series
    • Grand Theft Auto Series
    • Smuggler’s Run Series
    • The Italian Job
    • Max Payne Series
    • The Aforementioned Bully
  • BioShock
  • All-Pro Football 2K8
  • The Darkness
  • and more…

Recipe for success: one part Pole Position, one part Bejeweled , one part Dance Dance Revolution, your MP3/CD collection then mix well and release on Steam as Audiosurf. I’ve been playing it constantly for about almost a week and have to say that I have not played a simple game that is quite this addictive in a long time.

The game play really is a mash-up of all of the influences I mentioned. You start by selecting a “Character” from a selection of 14 of widely varying types, then select a music track (MP3, AAC (unprotected), WMA (unprotected), OGG, Flac, or Audio CD) to generate the “track” that you will be playing on. The game analyzes the music file that you selected and the track that is built is based on the instrumentation, tempo, and volume of the music. Then you use the character selected to play the track in a way that is strongly reminiscent of Pole Position except in three dimensions with some pretty trippy graphics. The Bejeweled like aspects are a bit more difficult to describe accurately and you’re better off downloading the free demo and taking a few rides to see how you like it.

At $10 it’s well worth the purchase especially since it also includes the Orange Box soundtrack which will set you back about the same amount from most legal sources. To support such inventive game design it’s worth a whole lot more.

EA, the world’s largest producer of video-games, and Spielberg have pulled back the curtain on what marks the debut of the filmmaker’s first ever video-game “BloomBlox.”

Link to CNN Story.

Burnout ParadiseWith Burnout Paradise, they take many of the cool elements of Burnout Revenge (camera angles, car wrecking, jumps) and add them to a free roaming map. I think the “party game” feature of the split-screen in Revenge was nice–but I quite like the challenge features and racing against other online players in the big open city. I also enjoy the new marked-man feature that makes you the target as you traverse an area of the map. And some of the stunt areas and jumps are absolutely fantastic.

I think it’s often the natural progression of a game to have it become something different along the way. This is not always a welcome change mind you. For instance, a lot of people were angry when NFS: Most Wanted came out because many of the aspects of the NFS: Underground series were lost when they made it an open-map game with a concrete story. The same thing has happened here with Burnout–they’re execution is just a little better in some ways.

So as a new game on the block goes–I have to give Burnout Paradise high marks. It is a fast paced, beautiful game with a lot of fun and entertaining options.

The next thing I want to do is pair a blue tooth headset with it so I can chat with my buddies in game and hook up the Sony Eye camera so I can make funny faces when I get taken out. OK, I do that anyway, but with the camera on, you’ll be able to see them.

Writer’s Note: There was a game called Crash Day that I hoped to one day play. It promised to have many of the elements that appear in Burnout Paradise but never made it to the domestic market. The game ended up being a cross between FPS and racing games instead–so I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it much. I had named it vaporware but it appears now that the game exists in PC format–UK and Europe only… for a very low price.
