The players use shields to defend their castle walls from the fireballs that ricochet around the playfield. Players can capture and catapult the fireballs at opposing castles. Fireballs destroy pieces of the castle walls they hit.
The original remake of Warlords for the 2600 was a 4 kb game. This was probably the best simultaneous 4 player game made for the Atari 2600. Medieval Mayhem weighs in at a hefty 32 kb. The reason for the extra heft is that this new version contains a lot of the arcade elements that weren’t in the original remake. The new version, however, does not have the “ghost” player trick shots that are found in the 2600 version.
The picture that is accompanying this post is an animated gif, showing the game development over the past year. You can also read about the game development through time in this forum post at atariage.com. At the end of the thread is a download of the final version’s rom image. This file can be used with either Stella or Z26. I use Stella with the Stelladapter. The Stelladapter lets you hook up your 2600 controllers to your PC.
So I recommend buying a Medieval Mayhem cartridge for your 2600, get that second set of paddles, and throw a Medieval Mayhem party.

Speaking of Atari Age, the Game Boy Advance had a collection of classic Atari titles released under the name: Activision Anthology. It includes Atari Baseball, Pitfall I and II, Kaboom and many other 2600 favorites. The cool thing is that it also contains the history of each Atari title, several prototype games and several new games by Atari Age. It retailed at $17.99 but can be found new for under $10 now.
