Some of you might not know this. But I’m a huge fan of Star Trek. I know, I know… it’s surprising. ;-)
Interesting that Cryptic, the developer of the acclaimed game “City of Heroes” obtained the rights from CBS Consumer Products for Star Trek games. Historically, Star Trek games pretty much suck with few exceptions. Such is the fate of a franchise when you have the dollars to flood the gaming community with video games month after month and year after year. Interplay had a good run in the early 90s with Star Trek the 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites. And though their later games in that decade were good… they lacked the substance that was Star Trek. We all hoped Activision would produce some good games and for the most part they didn’t–again there were a few exceptions like Starfleet Command III (though buggy as hell), Star Trek: Armada and Elite Force.
The fact that another development company dares to publish a Star Trek game really means that there is value in the franchise. The question is… will there be value in this game when it arrives? For me, I already know the answer is no. MMOs are like early 90s MUDs to me–and based on that simple fact (and the probability of it costing me $10 a month) I think I’ll not be interested yet again.
I think it’s very, very difficult to actually have a successful MMO. Even if the game is awesome if they don’t do the MMO parts just right they will probably loose users over time, or not get them at all. From what I hear Eve online is very cool and WOW is still super popular. People invest so much time and money into these games it’s going to take something special to get people to switch. Also, they better not have any downtime or server side performance issues because gamers have very high expectations when it comes to that sort of thing, especially when they are paying for it.
