Jay Maynard's New Airplane featured in the City Pages Article.Jay Maynard’s New Airplane featured in the August ’08 City Pages Article.

We’ve all seen the slashdot articles and comments, the footage from Jimmy Kimmel Live and read his website.  He’s a virtual local and was recently highlighted on GridCycle again when CS posted about the Uptown Theater’s Special Tron movie event hosted by non other than Jay Maynard aka… Tron Guy.

What you may not know, is that City Pages did an awesome article on him last August.  I always kind of felt bad for some of Tron Guy’s bad press over the years–especially since I’m such a big fan of Tron myself..  Even though we probably didn’t help the situation, we were at least light-hearted about our own media coverage with him and never insulting.   After all, GridCycle would not exist if it were not for the fact “Lightcycle.com”, “thegrid.com” and a number of other Tron-related domain names hadn’t already been taken.  I strongly recommend reading the City Pages article.  It is one of the best things I’ve read all week and the last paragraph of the article is to put it mildly:  vindication in motion.

I read that article over lunch when it was in City Pages. I nearly did a spit take when he gets to the part about his roommate being a furry. Good grief. He dresses up like Tron, his roommates gets his rocks off by dressing up as a cute animal and mingling with other cute animal cosplayers… remind me to never, EVER, want to party with these two.

Can’t mention the Tron Guy without mentioning my cousin. My cousin (Howard Tayler) have done some work together. They both like chupaqueso… they went in on this web site together (http://www.chupaqueso.com). Here they are doing a chupaqueso demo a couple years back at Penguicon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl5YetxQt2A).

Did we read the same article?

    —EDIT—

    ohhhh… We did!

They even share a love of costuming: Neubauer is a furry who dresses as a made-up character named “Orven the Ox.”

someone should make a tron-guy hasselhoff crotch recursion.
actually, wait a sec. On second thought, someone should not make a tron-guy hasselhoff crotch recursion. Yes. Emphasis on the “not” back there.

Tron guy definitely needs a better cod piece.

Concerning Tron guy’s sexual orientation, don’t ask, don’t tell. Feel free to assume, though.

  6. jmaynard Said, January 16, 2009 at 8:46 PM

Commander Tim, I gotta argue with you about an assumption you’re making: Furry fandom, and fursuiting, is not about sex for most folks. It’s no different from any other form of cosplay. It’s truly unfortunate that the “furries=perverts” meme has gained such currency, because it’s a disservice both tho those who believe it and those who get undeserved hatred because of it.

  7. pneubauer Said, January 16, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Hrm. To be snarky and say that the defective furry==pervert meme is useful for discovering idiots, or to be methodical and point out just how many layers of clothing that lack a zipper or place or for one are under the visible pieces of Orvan’s outfit? Nah, going to that much detail might get taken the wrong way. Who talks about their underthings, anyway?

  8. Commander Tim Said, January 17, 2009 at 7:42 AM

Please. I don’t care who does it or why; I’m still allowed to think it’s odd. Implying I’m and idiot because I don’t want to (and honestly, I don’t care) know why people dress up as animals? ‘Natch. Did somebody mention something about tolerance?

    p.s.

“Getting your rocks off and mingling” doesn’t translate as “I have sex dressed as a sports mascot”, I say the same things about video games. Here, I’ll put it in a sentence: “I’m going to the retro party to get my rocks off playing arcade games.”. Hope that helps. You went there first, not me, so don’t get all pissy.

    Oh, and welcome.

  9. jmaynard Said, January 17, 2009 at 8:23 AM

The average person would see “get your rocks off” as a euphemism for sex. When combined with the all-too-common “furries=perverts” meme, that’s an especially easy impression to form. There are far too many folks out there who think, incorrectly, it’s all about sex, egged on by the Vanity Fair article and the CSI episode. If you’re not one of them, I apologize.

  10. Zoyx Said, January 17, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Jay, one thing that I have always been curious about… Why the strong right wing leanings, given their history of intolerance?

  11. Commander Tim Said, January 17, 2009 at 10:35 AM

@jmaynard – I’m not one of those people, so apology accepted. Sorry for the confusion. Just to offer an explanation, I’m so used to people that know me in RL being the ones that read what I write on here, that I forget not everyone is familiar with my rather abrupt (and often vague) way of speaking. And I had no idea about Vanity Fair and CSI covering the subject, not being a consumer of either.

And guys, honestly, I say I find it odd, but I’m also the kind of person who would fight for your right to be able to express yourself in any way that makes you happy. We’re all geeks, and that is enough to unite us. All respect to both of you, and I mean that.

    Wurd.

I’m a conservative because tolerance or not won’t matter if there isn’t a country to live in because it’s been overrun by our enemies or because there’s not a functioning economy because the government has leveled everyone down to the same poverty. I consider those much more important issues. I’ve gotten along for as long as I have with things the way they are, and while getting the government out of my bedroom is important, there are more important considerations.

  13. Zoyx Said, January 17, 2009 at 1:33 PM

@jmaynard – Ahh, very well said, and I totally respect you for that. The people that vote right for moral reasons are the folks that frighten me. Don’t be surprised if you see me argue with on tax-cuts, etc., however. :-) cheers.

  14. Commander Tim Said, January 17, 2009 at 2:00 PM

@Zoyzx – Remember, don’t confuse the current regime of evangelicals with traditional conservatives… there is a BIG difference.

  15. Zoyx Said, January 17, 2009 at 3:46 PM

My parents were “Goldwater” conservatives. Fiscal conservatives that thought religious/moral issues did not belong in government. So yeah, I’m not confused. Sounds like Jay is a Goldwater conservative.

*double take* Jay! Thanks for visiting. I appreciate your stoppin’ in!

    16 comments… gotta be a record.

Quick, somebody post something about some other random internet celeb!

  18. Zoyx Said, January 21, 2009 at 8:14 AM

Google alerts are fun. That’s how the producer of “King of Kong” found me when I did a blog post on the movie.

I have a google alert going for Zoyx. I actually was quoted by someone in a blog post. Didn’t like what I said either.

I’ll have to echo what Jay said in response #9. I’ve been trying to find a better way to put it and have not so far, so I doubt I will.
