Tozai Games is bringing Irem’s classic R-Type games to XBox Live Arcade on February 4th! Not only do you get both R-Type 1 and 2, but they’ve also recreated the game faithfully in high-definition 3D, but in a 2D playfield (think Bionic Commando Rearmed). You can play in the traditional side-view mode, or adjust the POV on the fly to a slightly odd 3/4 view. There’s also what they’re calling Arcade Mode which puts the whole game in a very convincingly rendered R-Type cabinet that you can see working as you play. The joystick moves with you, and the buttons depress as well. Cool stuff. Check out the official trailer above, and then watch the video below to see the Arcade Mode in action. I’ll be picking this one up on release day for sure.
Yeah, that’s hot. Here’s the Facebook fan page for those who are into that kind of thing.

Almost makes me want to get a 360. There are lots of 360 owners on GC aren’t there?
Zoyx, POI, You, Cloudscout…
I know, but as a group, we are often scorned and ridiculed by pro Wii and PS3 propaganda. 😉
We need to form the XBox 360 proletariat!
You only appear to be scorned because the PS3 users are so defensive about their hardware and their hard decision to get a backwards compatible, blu-ray playing, ‘free’ ps3 networking, late-to-the game, overpriced piece of kickass hardware that apparently will be dissed for years to come by simultaneous and/or exclusive releases for the 360.
I’m pleased to report that this game is AWESOME! Bit spendy though at 1200 points ($15), but I don’t treat myself that often, so I grabbed it. Totally worth it. Be warned though: R-Type is one of the most hardcore shmups ever made. If you’re not into the mind-numbing difficulty, don’t waste your money. Go play with dolls or something.
