Since it opens today, I thought I’d mention a little more about Star Trek DAC coming our way next week.
This:

Will be only slightly related to this:

It turns out that the developers of the game did include the new Enterprise and Romulan ships seen in the new film but it will not follow the story you see this week (or in my case tonight) in the film. Instead, they opted to do something that hasn’t been done in recent Star Trek games: Make it fun. Allegedly the developers heard about the refresh of Star Trek and were inspired by Abrams take on the franchise so they set out to make a different kind of game entirely. Not only is it non-traditional in the sense that it is not like any other Star Trek game to date, but it also veers off where the media is concerned. This is the first Star Trek game to be exclusively download only. Look for it the middle of next week on XBox Live and in the PlayStation Store.

I’ll wait to pass judgment. I was very excited about the last Trek game that came out for the 360, but was very disappointed. However, I’m willing to give anything a chance.
Star Trek games are a tricky animal. But traditionally, the games I like have little to do with the movie and more to do with making you feel like you’re in your own adventure.
I present… Star Trek for the 2600 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5lHb85a19I
The dummy is shooting at the Starbase.
1. That is Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator! The port from the very super awesome vector graphics arcade game. One might say my most favoritist arcade game ever!
2. I was playing the ColecoVision version last night as it arrived in the mail yesterday and it blows the Atari VCS and 5200 versions away!
3. This game was made for almost every platform including but not limited to:
I love it!
I had Star Trek SOS for the TI-99/4A. Not a bad game. You could use the cheat code. I got good at shooting the nomad quickly before it could flood the place with mines.
There was also “TI-TREK” which was a painfully slow(TI-Basic) turn-based combat simulator. It would take forever to fire a photon torpedo. To add insult to injury the game talks to you saying “The klingons….say…you..missed…ha…ha.”.
Oh yeah! Good ol’ Nomad. I really liked the 5200 version when you shot Nomad because it would play the theme and throw a rainbow of color up on the screen.
Ok, I must have the 2600 version of ST:SOS… bidding now. Looks like there is an Atari 8-bit version as well. Not to surprising since the 5200 and 8-bits were based on the same platform.
I’m confused. What is an Atari 8-bit? The 5200 is 8-bit right? ‘splain to me!
Atari 8-bit references their line of computers… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_800. These computers have game ports for plugging in Atari 2600 joysticks, so they were used more for gaming, then anything productive. They had nearly the same guts as the 5200. The AtariAge 8-bit forums… http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showforum=12 . I just bought an Atari 800. I can bring it for show n’ tell some day.
So I assume then that the Atari 5200 is part of that heritage and therefore in the forums regularly?
I don’t know about shared heritage. It was easy to convert games from one unit to the other. Here is a thread about a guy who converted 5200 games for use on the 8-bits… http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=127937 . I plan on trying these out as soon as I get the additional hardware.
Boy, this movie has some of the best positive buzz in a long time. May have to break down and go to a theater.
Yeah, you may want to.

On the “8-bit” subject. That seems … not to seem nitpicky … but a terribly improper term for an “Atari Computer.” “8-bit” can be applied to everything from the Atari 5200, to the Sega Master System and the NES. It seems a botched use of the term.
I found this video of the arcade version with some strategy help along the way. this guy is way better at it than I ever was . :) They had the whole sit down version at this bar in Cedar Falls IA. Great memories.

There were 10 different Atari computer models… the game cartridges were compatible with all of them. So I guess the nickname for these games became Atari 8-bit games. I suppose you could list all of the computers like this guy did (http://is.gd/yCEg), but calling it and Atari 8-bit game is a bit simpler. I love playing semantics!
You guys are so cool. I am honored to know individuals who can teach a newbie like me anything
So, i tried the demo of the DAC game last night. btw, wtf is dac? It was very pretty and had good music. The gameplay kinda sucked tho and I didn’t feel hooked enough to purchase it. I feel sorry for the developers, sounds like they really tried to make a fun game but I don’t think it worked. They should have just re-made the operations simulator. or even better, the really old text based Star Trek game! :)

Can you imagine what a modern day remake of Strategic Ops would be like? Oh man… with game play that simple, the fun factor would be through the roof. And with modern graphics, you could get almost totally photo realistic with the ships. Add in some multiplayer, and I think you’ve struck gold.

@POI: Deathmatch Assault & Conquest
@TIm & POI: Totally.
I tried the demo too. It reminded me of NetTrek for the Mac.
Wow. I might actually have a reason to fire up the SE30… Apparently that game is black and white and requires two colors to even run.
–edit–
And apparently there is still a community!
