Easily one of my favorite games of this generation, Bionic Commando Rearmed is getting some updates. One good, and one not-so-good. The first is that the PlayStation 3 version of the game is finally getting the Trophy support that fans have been begging Capcom for. The second, and POI should appreciate this*, the developers have gone back and changed certain game play elements to make the game easier for the giant cry-babies that thought it was too hard. Check out the list:

  • You now have unlimited lives.
  • Now when you die, you re-spawn on the last piece of ground you were touching, rather than the beginning of the level.
  • You can now reel out your line if you screwed up your shot.
  • Swinging into a wall no longer causes your grapple to release.

This upsets me. I worked my way through this game. Was it easy? No, but it was a VERY fun challenge. It really gave you a sense of accomplishment when you fought your way through some of the really tough sections of the game. Ask anyone that watched me play through 99% of the game at POI’s house on easy mode; I bitched the whole time that Easy Mode was TOO easy. All of the harrowing gaps, and difficult timing maneuvers that you had to actually work at perfecting were gone, replaced by blocks that wouldn’t let you fall to your death if you tried. Is that what this generation of gamers has come to? Being afraid of a challenge? Disliking a game because it doesn’t instantly let you win? What’s next; a special edition of Donkey Kong where you can turn off the barrels if you can’t manage to jump over them? Bah! Bah, I say!

*You know I’m just kidding about this. POI is nowhere near as lame as the losers who needed Capcom to add a ‘baby mode’ to the game so they could lazily wander through a game. Hugs not drugs.

For these long drawn out story games, I like to go through once in baby/cheat mode. If I liked the game/story enough, then try it on a more difficult setting.

There is no story to Donkey Kong. That’s one of the things I like about the classic games. No effing story to get in the way of getting a high score.

lol. Some scotch almost flew out my nose when I read this.heh
yes. I do suck at this game. I’ve always sucked at this game. It was way too hard. I hardly even have to touch the controller and it’s like “YOU DIED”.

They should have taken a lesson from Fable II. All you have to do is eat pies to stay alive in that game. THAT is what I payed $60 for. Granted, you’ll get fat as a pig but it’s worth it. Its the same in saints row, a hamburger fixes anything. Thank God for fast food.

but seriously, sometimes grinding over and over on a level just stops to be fun. prince of persia and metroid come to mind. boredom and frustration set in and I think, “why do I need this stupid achievement anyway?”. so, I guess I’m just lame enough to prefer games where I can save at will or level up until i’m uber-powerfull. 🙂 ahhhh yes, uber-ness.

funny, now that I think about it…even newer non-retro games like rainbow six annoy me for the exact same reason. I hate to re-do stuff…in particular if they make me watch cut scenes. grr

of course, I make a special exception for super mario. i even like the cut scenes in that game.

Let me know the next time you’re playing a game, I’ll have the waaahmbulance standing by to assist you. 😉

I am playing Ghostbusters on the Wii. I don’t like the gameplay for this game, this title is all story. So the inverse problem with this game. Gameplay is interrupting my cut scenes, grrr. Give me some cheats so I can watch the game.

I think you mean cut scenes are interrupting your game play?

The story is something I really enjoy about this. I enjoy the break in the game. Time to think about what I’m going to do next, time to check and upgrade my inventory, time to read Tobin’s spirit guide.

You must be playing it wrong. 😉

@Tim: So you can still play in normal mode right?

    Where’s that guy’s nose?

  8. Commander Tim Said, July 27, 2009 at 11:53 AM

@Adam – No. They changed Easy and Normal mode. The only ones they left alone were Hard and Nightmare.

@S1500 – Spencer doesn’t need a nose. Noses only get in the way of bionic arming.

That is retarded. I’m not buying it for sure now.

  10. s1500 Said, July 27, 2009 at 6:37 PM

I couldn’t make it past the demo, so I didn’t buy it.

I’m glad I was able to play through it before they dumbed it down. I got the full challenge of a fantastic game. I’ll be sure to reject any patches the game offers to download for me.

Side note: all of the things they changed were mechanics that were in the original NES title. Y’know, the game that is considered one of the classics of the genre. Apparently, Grin was too busy trying to pay proper respect to the title, that they forgot modern gamers are whiny bitches compared to gamers of yesteryear. 😀

  12. Zoyx Said, July 28, 2009 at 6:12 AM

I don’t think it is the modern gamer, game makers just want to appeal to broader audience. They want those casual gamer dollars. The hard modes haven’t been nerfed, so I don’t see the problem.

  13. Madaracs Said, July 28, 2009 at 10:07 AM

I prefer to play on “Normal.” Hard is for people that are gluttons for punishment.

  14. POI Said, July 28, 2009 at 12:33 PM

I may be a casual gamer but I am not a broad audience.

  15. Commander Tim Said, July 28, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Casual gamers play Peggle, not Morrowind.

  16. Madaracs Said, July 28, 2009 at 2:19 PM

I know not either of these.

  17. Zoyx Said, July 28, 2009 at 9:28 PM

Bionic Commando just came out on Steam. I wonder how nerfy this version is.

Hey! Don’t be dissin’ the Peggle!

  18. POI Said, July 29, 2009 at 6:12 AM

    I love peggle! And morrowind.

  19. Commander Tim Said, July 29, 2009 at 7:33 AM

Hey now, I love Peggle as well. Spent too much time on the PC/XBLA versions. The game should come with a support group for addiction.

@POI – You’ll love nothing and like it!

  20. Madaracs Said, July 29, 2009 at 8:34 AM

    WTF is peggle!?

  21. Commander Tim Said, July 29, 2009 at 8:51 AM

Yet another hit of videogame crack from Pop Cap. Seriously, these guys laugh all the way to the bank.

Ooooooh yeaaaah. I played that at Big Vs. It’s like Pachinko on crack. Fun times.

  23. s1500 Said, July 29, 2009 at 10:26 AM

Big V’s on University avenue? I didn’t know Peggle was out in any form of coin-op form. Makes sense tho, as they are the king of puzzle games. I like the one with the sliding tribble-like rows of things.

  24. Commander Tim Said, July 29, 2009 at 11:08 AM

    lolz

  25. Madaracs Said, July 29, 2009 at 11:38 AM

@S1500: No Big V’s as in ‘POI’ aka Adam V aka “The Big V”
