Consoles age almost as rapidly as that PC you bought three years ago. Yesterday, in the dizzying day that was 09.09.09, we all forgot to stop and give the Dreamcast some respect. Well past it’s prime–it was born in 1999 to critical acclaim. Unfortunately, Sega opted shortly thereafter to give up on the console market.
Though her hardware may look older than it actually is, the Dreamcast is widely regarded as an excellent console–even if a close 2nd or 3rd to today’s standards. Yes, they have those bulky controllers. The boring faded white color of the console no longer seems like it did in 1999: Compact, clean and fresh. Despite, this the system was very powerful at the time and boasts an excellent library of now-retro titles. If we go by the rule of thumb we’ve been following for the GridCycle sponsored Retro Video Game parties: Any console 10 Years or older (or new consoles playing games older than 10 years), then we just unlocked a great library of retro titles including but not limited to:
- Crazy Taxi
- House of the Dead 2
- Hydro Thunder
- Monaco Grand Prix
- Mortal Kombat Gold
- NFL 2K
- PenPen TRiIceLon
- Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
- Sonic Adventure
- Soulcalibur
- and more!
Alright, we’ve always had a Dreamcast present at the Retro gigs. That’s because we allow ‘dead’ consoles and neo-retro titles in addition to any retro console or modern console playing old games.
Dreamcast we salute you. We are sorry we missed you’re birthday yesterday– but we’ll make sure and have a special party for you on 10.10.2009 where we’ll make sure some of your greatest titles make an appearance.
Oh! I almost forgot! In honor of the console’s 10th birthday a NEW release has surfaced from the Senile Team at Red Spot Games! It’s a retro-esque title called: Rush Rush Rally Racing! It’s a brand-new four player title exclusively for the Dreamcast that the company is currently taking preorders for. So go over to their website and get yours today!

I remember buying one for $50 on clearance. It’s like the second coming of “under 50 bucks! 50 bucks!?!” ad campaign by Atari for the 2600 back in the late 80s. I liked Demolition Racer 2: No Exit. Playing it again several years later had no appeal to me.
I just pre-ordered this title. (This is where Tim groans and says, ‘Of course you did.’) I think it will be a blast. If it doesn’t make it by the retro party, I will have a special Dreamcast gathering at my place so we can try it out. Fire up the VMUs, baby! We’re gonna play some DC!
My Dreamcast collection of software and hardware is quite robust. If there is to be a Dreamcast day, you have my axe.
I’ve got two right now also. It’d be fun but you really need a couple of 19″ or bigger TVs for the DC.
Were there any “system link” like games released for it, all Online games aside?
Yes. Tim and I were discussing it at length.
It’s called the Vs. Link Cable. You can get a non-licensed one for about $20 U.S. — the original cables are nearly impossible to find.
Here is a link to a cheaper cable: http://www.toysnjoys.com/access_dc_3.html
Unfortunately, there were not many games for the “Vs. Link cable.”:
* Aero Dancing F
* Aero Dancing I
* Aerowings 2 (Speculated)
* F355
* Sega Rally 2
* Sega Tetris
* Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Ooh I like Virtual On. That’s a fun one in the arcades. Heh “Sega tetris”
There are a lot of people that seek out the Virtual Sticks and Vs. Cable so that they can have the arcade experience at home.
