I thought we could start a post about what each of us will volunteer to bring to the 6th retro video-gaming party so we can minimize on dupe machines, consoles, games and whatnot.

I’m bringing:

  • 4 – 13″ Color TVs
  • 1 Black and White TV
  • Super Pong IV
  • Odyssey 4000 (Could use a color dial TV for this bad boy if anyone wants to bring one.)
  • Odyssey2 with ‘The Voice’. Games: Smithereens (the best of the voice games), U.F.O. and Sub Chase for sure.
  • Sega Genesis with 32X, Flight Stick with Afterburner and Probably SW: Arcade.
  • NES with some Rip Off Chinese games, some famicom classics and a few favorites. (Contra? Tecmo Super Bowl?)
  • Vectrex
  • Arcade:  Ms. Pac-Man or Tron.  Probably not both.
  • I may bring my Game Console stand too…
  • I’m going to bring a GBA SP and some controllers so we can play Pac-Man Vs.  (either on my Game Cube or Matt’s)

I think I’ll also do a podcast of the event.

Cross-posted to FB Event.

    My assets:

    1. Colecovision with Composite A/V outs – flakey controllers, only 3 games + 2600 add-on
    2. 2 famiclones. Each has some built-in games + fully working cart slots(wait, I’m up to 3 now)
    3. a 20 inch TV that has S-video in + that weird BNC connector
    4. N64 – meh, might skip this one
    5. Chintendo Vii – might skip
    6. Flashback 1, Flashback 2, Atari Paddle(single player version).
    7. C64 DTV
Probably should hunt down the A/V cables and just bring the 3-way A/V switchbox.

I have friends with hardware too. One said he had a Dreamcast he could bring.

  2. Cloudscout Said, September 28, 2009 at 12:37 PM

I think the Odyssey 4000 should be hooked up to that JCPenney TV that I have.

Here’s what I have here already:

    MAME Cabinet
    Battle Arena Toshinden 2 Cabinet
    Centipede Cabinet (60-in1)
    Relief Pitcher Cabinet
    Cruis’n World Cabinet
    Bow and Arrow Pinball Machine
Commodore 64 with Magic Voice (The best way to play Gorf outside of the Arcade)
    Commodore SX64
    Commodore 128
    Commodore 128D
    Commodore Amiga 500
    Commodore Amiga 2000
    Sega Dreamcast
    Sony Playstation
    Atari 2600
    NES
    SNES
    Philips CDi
    Sega Genesis
    JVC XEye

I have 2 13″ TVs, the aforementioned JCPenney TV (10 inch), a 27″ TV I have monitors for the Commodore stuff, too.

  3. Zoyx Said, September 28, 2009 at 12:48 PM

    13″ & 19″ tube TVs – I have a spare LCD, if needed.
Sears Heavy Sixer (2600) with multi-cart.
    Atari 800 with multi-cart
    Atari 5200 with multi-cart
Atari 7800 and a few games
    Dingoo with emulators
    6 foot table

I could bring my Mame setup… not too hard to transport. I have Xybots and Track n Field for arcade games, but would be a serious pain to move to the party… need help there.

I have other consoles of course, but I should probably stay focused on Atari.

  4. Madaracs Said, September 28, 2009 at 1:48 PM

LCD Could work for a Dreamcast depending on the size. It’s nice to have a DC on a 20″ or better… especially for Chu Chu and other 4 player type games.

Hmm. S1500, I have a ColecoVision with TONS of games how bad are your controllers? I _could_ bring that too–but I’m already bringing a pile of stuff. I have recently acquired the somewhat rare carts: Montezuma’s Revenge and Spy Hunter for the Coleco.

Glad Zoyx is bringing the Atari stuff. Vernier usually brings his 5200 with the repaired controllers. You have refurbs too, Zoyx?

I’ll bring a couple of 4′ tables too. And maybe my folding chairs though I think for many systems we just stood in the past.

I just remembered that I will probably be bringing my SMS too. I have a game called Transbot that is sure to be a hit.

@CS: I’ll take you up on the JC Penney TV hookup.

@POI: Can you bring the whiteboard?

@Zoyx: Hey! That LCD could be great for a Plug N Play TV game if it has RCA inputs! Hehehe.

  5. s1500 Said, September 28, 2009 at 1:55 PM

My controllers are somewhat passable. I have 2 regular ones + 2 roller controllers. One of my friends might be bringing his LCD TV, but it depends on who brings him.

  6. Zoyx Said, September 28, 2009 at 2:50 PM

5200 controllers… I refurbed one of them. I have two others, and I think one of those works. I also have an adapter that lets you plug in 2600 controllers. And I have the track-ball.

I’ll bring my 21″ LCD then. It has all connections.

I think I will bring the Mame setup.

Bringing a couple folding chairs to go along with the table.

Any ideas for competition games. I will try and think of good Atari/Mame ones. Whiteboard?

  7. Madaracs Said, September 28, 2009 at 3:02 PM

I refurbished both of POI’s so they work perfectly. That was a 4 input system as I recall too. (At least the first models were)

Maybe POI could bring his and you could bring the trackball, the adapter the games you want and that cool mutli cart you have? Save you some space in your car if POI is OK with it. Otherwise you should both bring them! ;-)

Anyone have a working Atari 400? I’m bidding on one but I don’t think I’ll win.

Whiteboard worked great for score keeping. (I requested it above) We would benefit for more than one though.

  8. Zoyx Said, September 28, 2009 at 4:10 PM

I’ll bring my 5200 stuff… POI can bring his, and then we’ll have a good ol’ fashioned nerd fight over whose is best ! ;-)

Don’t have a 400. Reminds me, I have an Atari XEGS. I might bring that instead of the Atari 800. Depends on its compatibility with the 8-bit games and the multi-cart.

  9. Cloudscout Said, September 28, 2009 at 7:21 PM

I’d love to see the XEGS. I’ve been wanting an 800 for a while myself.

  10. Cloudscout Said, September 28, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Tonight I picked up a floppy drive and a bunch of games (both disk and cart) for the
Atari 800. Now I just need to buy an Atari 800… I’m actually bidding on an XEGS on eBay right now.

  11. Zoyx Said, September 29, 2009 at 12:46 PM

Cool! I don’t have a floppy drive. Hope you get the XEGS… it is a pretty cool system. It is what the 5200 should have been.

I will bring both the 800 and XEGS. It will be game time decision on which systems to set up.

  12. Cloudscout Said, September 29, 2009 at 3:45 PM

I’m also thinking about getting a Coleco Gemini just for kicks.

  13. Madaracs Said, September 29, 2009 at 3:55 PM

    This one is pretty cheap!

I looked at one of these too and then I thought… I have 3 Atari 2600s now. One VCS, one vader and the Colecovision with expansion module.

  14. Zoyx Said, September 29, 2009 at 4:26 PM

    Me… 2 heavies, 1 light, 1 junior & the colecovision expansion, plus 2 7800s which are backward compatible… but I want more!

  15. Zoyx Said, September 29, 2009 at 11:40 PM

Dunno about the mame computer, just corrupted the OS. Which may lead me to redo the whole thing.

  16. Madaracs Said, September 30, 2009 at 7:59 AM

    I forgot about my 7800. :-)

  17. Zoyx Said, September 30, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Ummm, do I need to bring anything. Sounds like you guys have it all covered.

  18. Madaracs Said, September 30, 2009 at 11:26 AM

I’m not bringing my Atari stuff. What I’m bringing is at the top. I was just commenting on my not needing another Atari. I’m gonna play the sh!7 out of your Atari stuff, Zoyx. And I STILL think it would be cool to have two Vectrex. We could call it the Vectrecade!

What we could probably use is:

    • Tim’s Saturn and Games
    • N64 Anyone? (BTW-Pawn America on Lyndale in Bloomington has these for $15.00 with a controller.)
    • SNES
    • Vintage Apples
    • More TVs
    • More unusual consoles. TurboGrafx16? Jag-you-are? Fairchild Channel F?
  19. Zoyx Said, September 30, 2009 at 1:03 PM

Sorry. Work politics, plus this broken mame computer has put me in a grouchy mood, so I am mis-interpreting things.

Looks like a mainboard problem. Swapped out memory, power supplies, booted off a windows xp setup disc without the hard drive connected… all blue screens. I am strongly considering just using my mac mini for mame, and not dealing with this right now.

  20. Madaracs Said, September 30, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Well it won’t overheat…that thing is designed for portability.

  21. Zoyx Said, September 30, 2009 at 2:36 PM

More grouchy… Harmony cart arrived, and doesn’t work. Craptacular.

  22. Madaracs Said, September 30, 2009 at 4:01 PM

    Argh! I ordered a couple of carts but I don’t know when I’ll see them… Pac-man’s for the 7800.

  23. Commander Tim Said, September 30, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Actually, I was going to let the Saturn sit this one out. Not sure what I’ll bring, if anything. Like Zoyx said; seems like you guys have got it pretty well covered.

  24. Cloudscout Said, September 30, 2009 at 10:29 PM

I’m hoping to pick up a XEGS and/or a 600XL but I doubt either will be here in time for the party.

Zoyx, which 800 model do you have? The original or the XL?

  25. s1500 Said, October 1, 2009 at 7:16 AM

But I enjoyed that Saturn. I liked getting a taste of Road Rash. Unless you want to bring the 3DO version.

  26. POI Said, October 1, 2009 at 7:18 AM

    I shall bring the 5200.
Thus, the whiteboard + marker I shall bring as well
and we shall play games and keep the scores of them.

  27. Zoyx Said, October 1, 2009 at 7:48 AM

@cloudscout – vanilla 800. The one with the ample shielding.

  28. Madaracs Said, October 1, 2009 at 7:48 AM

    >>Like Zoyx said; seems like you guys have got it pretty well covered.

Do you two even know how ‘woe is me’ this statement sounds? Buck up, lil’ campers!

I’m not bringing my Saturn. I’ve got enough work ahead of me with all that I’ve volunteered to make this a good party for everyone involved by bringing a huge pile of stuff to make it fun for everyone so that everyone can try different systems and it will be fun for a boy and a girl.

  29. s1500 Said, October 1, 2009 at 8:10 AM

I realized I can’t find my power supply for the FB2, so that one might sit out, unless someone can bring one.

  30. Madaracs Said, October 1, 2009 at 9:42 AM

    Atari Flashback 2?

    Cloudscout has one.

  31. s1500 Said, October 1, 2009 at 11:39 AM

Gotcha. I shall see how much I can stuff in the MINI.

  32. Cloudscout Said, October 1, 2009 at 12:09 PM

I’m currently making a joystick for the TI99 (rewiring an old joystick for the correct pinout). Assuming the new power supply I have fixes the problems the machine was having at the spring party, we should be able to play some games on that thing as well.

  33. s1500 Said, October 1, 2009 at 1:13 PM

Cloudscout: What’s the gist of rewiring it? I’ve seen the schematics for a TI to Atari adaptor(for 2 sticks), but never saw specs for modding just the stick.

  34. Madaracs Said, October 1, 2009 at 1:21 PM

@Zoyx: My Medieval Mayhem cart came broken. He was very good about immediate replacement upon my returning it.

Good News! I will be bringing two NEW Atari 7800 Games to the party. (So I guess I will bring my 7800 with the D-pads) Super Pac-Man and Pac-Man Jr! For those of you who remember, that April Fools joke on Atari-age this year was about a kid finding a prototype version of Pac-Man Jr. in his dad’s Atari 7800 collection. I was roped into that whole thread. So much so that Cloudscout had to practically shoot me out of the sky with a BB gun to come down from the excitement.

Well, Bob Decrescenzo is releasing his game through Atariage in a limited run and I’m getting a copy! It is one of the more fun pac-man games and it will be neat to have the 7800 hardware sporting a game that would have been a surefire hit had it been released officially.

  35. Cloudscout Said, October 1, 2009 at 1:44 PM

s1500: It’s actually a little tricky since the TI uses pins 7 and 9 which aren’t used on Atari/Commodore joysticks. Sega Genesis controllers use all 9 pins, though, and I happened to have a broken one sitting around as well as a reproduction Atari joystick. So what I’m doing is soldering the cord from the Sega Genesis controller to the board inside the Atari joystick. I’ll post pictures when it’s finished.

  36. Zoyx Said, October 1, 2009 at 2:56 PM

The homebrews I have for the 7800 include Jr. Pac-man, Pac-man Collection & Bonq. I just received Juno First homebrew for the 2600.

It is Batari handling the return of my Harmony cart. He is part of the development team. I received one of their first run carts (#26). You always run the risk of a defective part when you are an early adopter. I should have my 2nd Harmony before the party. I think he would appreciate feed back before they go into their next production run… so if there is something you would like improved, let me know and I can pass it along.

Can’t use my mac-mini for mame. Needs ps/2 connectors for the slikstik controller. For some reason my USB>ps/2 adapter isn’t working… must find a plan C or D.

  37. Commander Tim Said, October 2, 2009 at 6:31 AM

It’s not “woe is me”, Madaracs. Really. There’s just going to be A LOT of gear there; space is always a concern.

If it’s that big a deal, I’ll bring my Saturn. My original plan was to just bring my Dreamcast games folder, since this is the first year that it’s allowed (and I figured there would be a system there). That and my X-Arcade with Dreamcast adapters for arcade bliss.

I’ll open it up to the floor. Should I bring:

Dreamcast collection (games, light guns, X-Arcade, system if nobody is bringing one)
    or >>
Saturn stuff (same things I brought to the previous parties)

Also, will I need to bring a television, or is there already enough there? I’ll need A/V jacks for either system. I can bring a 13″ if need be. Just let me know.

Zoyx > I’ve got a Y-Mouse adapter that I use for my X-Arcade. Works perfectly on the Mac. Want me to bring it?

    GridCycle: Democracy NOW!

  38. s1500 Said, October 2, 2009 at 7:40 AM

I would like to see the Saturn again, as there’s more games in the Saturnomicon I would like to try. Friend might be bringing a Dreamcast, but not 100% sure if he can make it.

  39. Madaracs Said, October 2, 2009 at 7:44 AM

@Commander Tim: Dreamcast has been there every time as it is a “dead console.” ;-) Chu Chu Rocket is a favorite among the attendees. We’ll probably use Cloudscout’s since he has one. On the DC note, I won’t be receiving my copy of Rush Rush Rally Racing before the Gaming party. :-( Do bring your Saturn stuff and a TV. I would bring mine but as I’ve said, I’m already toting a lot of stuff. Your collection reigns supreme so it only stands to reason…
    —
I think the general rule has always been that if you’re bringing a system you should bring a TV for it. Note to everyone bringing stuff: Don’t expect to have TVs supplied. And no, there are NEVER enough TVs!

  40. Commander Tim Said, October 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM

    > And no, there are NEVER enough TVs!

Not meaning to nitpick, but the only reason I asked is because I brought a TV to the last one, and it wasn’t needed at all. Figured I’d ask as it would be one less thing I’d need to drag with me to work.

  41. Madaracs Said, October 2, 2009 at 9:35 PM

To all: Please bring your TVs. I already know we do not have enough for the consoles that will be present. TV availability varies from party to party. I’ve had to unload at 5 TVs since the last gig.

Tim: Please bring what you WANT to bring. We don’t want to force anyone. Thank you.

  42. Cloudscout Said, October 3, 2009 at 4:13 AM

Speak for yourself. I want to force people. In fact, I’m thinking about hiring Fat Tony and his gang to “encourage” the hold-outs to cooperate. Then there’s the business of the pretzel money…

  43. s1500 Said, October 3, 2009 at 2:35 PM

I propose a telethon called “We Temporarily want your TVs”. We will have dancing furries for entertainment.

  44. Commander Tim Said, October 3, 2009 at 7:13 PM

I feel forced. Like a prison movie.

  45. Cloudscout Said, October 3, 2009 at 9:55 PM

Adam and I were quite productive with my arcade machines today. The Centipede cabinet is now finished. The blue monitor bezel has been installed. We also properly mounted the monitor in the Battle Arena Toshinden 2 cabinet, cut a new black bezel for the MAME cabinet and cut new plexiglass for both.

  46. Commander Tim Said, October 4, 2009 at 7:42 AM

Wicked sweet. I look forward to stress testing them at the party. So long as you don’t force me to play them… stop forcing yourself on me, Matt!

  47. Cloudscout Said, October 4, 2009 at 4:37 PM

    Even more progress made today.

It started with a nice Craigslist haul… I picked up the following from a guy over in Saint Paul this morning:

    1 Atari 800XL
    1 Atari 130XE
    2 Atari 1050 Floppy Drives
    1 Atari 1010 Tape Drive
    1 TI-99/4A
    1 Cassette Deck for TI-99/4A

Plus a bunch of cartridges for both the Atari and TI systems.

We have a bunch of stuff already set up on one side of the garage. By the way, those of you who are dropping by tomorrow to watch the Vikings/Packers game here can feel free to bring your systems/TVs/tables/chairs with you. That will let me get more stuff set up before the party so we can just get right to the fun part on Saturday without all of the time wasted setting everything up.

  48. s1500 Said, October 4, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Ooh did you by chance get Editor/Assembler for the TI-99/4A?

  49. Cloudscout Said, October 4, 2009 at 8:30 PM

I don’t think so. I’m going to be cataloging all of my , Sega, Nintendo, Commodore, Atari and TI carts this week, though.

  50. s1500 Said, October 6, 2009 at 7:27 AM

So Cloudskawt what’s your address? I don’t remember if I have been to your house before. You can email it to me lego-minifig@comcast.net. BTW I gave Crazy Climber wind of the event, but he forgot his password.

  51. Commander Tim Said, October 6, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Second star on the right; straight on till morning.

  52. Cloudscout Said, October 6, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Basically about a block-and-a-half east of Madaracs house.
