Star Tribune has an article on vintage video game collecting. I mirrored the article in my blog in case the Strib web site does a purge. We must get these type of people to contribute to this site. They are out there.

Medieval Mayhem Progress Animated gif
There are still games being made for the Atari 2600. The latest is Medieval Mayhem. This is a remake of the arcade game Warlords. A quick description of the game…

The players use shields to defend their castle walls from the fireballs that ricochet around the playfield. Players can capture and catapult the fireballs at opposing castles. Fireballs destroy pieces of the castle walls they hit.

The original remake of Warlords for the 2600 was a 4 kb game. This was probably the best simultaneous 4 player game made for the Atari 2600. Medieval Mayhem weighs in at a hefty 32 kb. The reason for the extra heft is that this new version contains a lot of the arcade elements that weren’t in the original remake. The new version, however, does not have the “ghost” player trick shots that are found in the 2600 version.

The picture that is accompanying this post is an animated gif, showing the game development over the past year. You can also read about the game development through time in this forum post at atariage.com. At the end of the thread is a download of the final version’s rom image. This file can be used with either Stella or Z26. I use Stella with the Stelladapter. The Stelladapter lets you hook up your 2600 controllers to your PC.

So I recommend buying a Medieval Mayhem cartridge for your 2600, get that second set of paddles, and throw a Medieval Mayhem party.

Zoyx Atari 2600I dug out the old Atari 2600 this morning. Must of been the first time in about 3 years. What inspired me was the Atari Age forum. They have weekly competitions that they announce. Nothing like a little competition to light a fire under me. I found my old high scores from my teenage years… looks like I have some work to do to catch up to the elite players.

Some of the carts don’t work. I suspect it is dirty contacts. I couldn’t find my Nintendo cleaning kit. These cleaning kits use isopropyl alcohol, correct? Also the lever on the game reset was broken off. Anyone have a creative way of fixing this?

Spawns of Deflebub screenieI just downloaded and played a tripped out mod for UT2004. Think of it as a multiplayer arcade game. The name of this mod is Spawns of Deflebub (SoD). Seems complicated when you view the YouTube videos, but it is quite simple. You use your primary fire to build a protective wall. Use your alternate fire to shoot a ball. In order to score points, your ball must rebound off of a wall or tile, before hitting an opposing player. There are various powerups available to enhance your ball or your movement.

The look and feel of SoD is very arcade-like. Actually when I first saw the screenshots, I thought of Tron. Gameplay doesn’t have that much as far as violence, so this game is kid friendly. I’ve only played it for a few minutes, but SoD has possibilities. If you have a copy of Ut2004, I recommend downloading and giving SoD a shot.

A case modder took an XBox 360 and converted it into a laptop. Here is his creation. Also an abbreviated walkthrough of the modding process. Finally a video of the system in action…
