This PC World article goes through the history of games consoles by way of TV commercials. Fun article for those who like to reminisce.

P.S. The Atari 2600 game of the week at Atari Age is Pitfall! I already posted a score. I challenge thee.

According to a press release, Burger King has sold over two million copies of their Xbox games so far. They don’t break out quantities of individual titles so we won’t know whether or not Big Bumpin’ has outsold Gears of War, but it’s still an impressive feat.

Star Tribune has an article on vintage video game collecting. I mirrored the article in my blog in case the Strib web site does a purge. We must get these type of people to contribute to this site. They are out there.

Medieval Mayhem Progress Animated gif
There are still games being made for the Atari 2600. The latest is Medieval Mayhem. This is a remake of the arcade game Warlords. A quick description of the game…

The players use shields to defend their castle walls from the fireballs that ricochet around the playfield. Players can capture and catapult the fireballs at opposing castles. Fireballs destroy pieces of the castle walls they hit.

The original remake of Warlords for the 2600 was a 4 kb game. This was probably the best simultaneous 4 player game made for the Atari 2600. Medieval Mayhem weighs in at a hefty 32 kb. The reason for the extra heft is that this new version contains a lot of the arcade elements that weren’t in the original remake. The new version, however, does not have the “ghost” player trick shots that are found in the 2600 version.

The picture that is accompanying this post is an animated gif, showing the game development over the past year. You can also read about the game development through time in this forum post at atariage.com. At the end of the thread is a download of the final version’s rom image. This file can be used with either Stella or Z26. I use Stella with the Stelladapter. The Stelladapter lets you hook up your 2600 controllers to your PC.

So I recommend buying a Medieval Mayhem cartridge for your 2600, get that second set of paddles, and throw a Medieval Mayhem party.

I just got done playing RoboBlitz on XBLA for the past 3 hours, and I can say for certain that it doesn’t suck. I’ve actually been looking forward to this one for quite awhile since I quite like puzzle games, and it has just enough puzzle and just enough action to make it worth playing. At 1200 points, it’s certainly not the cheapest but it’s not the same price ballpark as Lumines Live and will give you more entertainment value than watching Poseidon in HD twice. 🙂
