Here’s a bunch of speculation on what the next version of the Wii might be.

I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more as the rumors really get rolling but I find it interesting to hear that Nintendo has more than tripled it’s R&D spending from 2006-2007. Maybe they just needed an excuse to spend a bunch of $.

What I want to see is an all solid state console. No optical drive, hard drive, etc. Moving parts make these things too fragile. Nintendo is the most likely candidate to this.

I don’t ever want to see a pure solid state memory system. This would render it susceptible to eventual write issues essentially bricking the unit. Would I be correct in that assumption?

I suppose it would be like having one of your memory cards go bad on your computer.

I think it would be pretty cool to have games on cartridges again. As long as I don’t have to blow on them to make them work.

You don’t like blowing carts? Does it make you feel dirty? 😉

Nintendo is spending a lot on R&D, so hopefully they are working on robust solid state tech. Agree that a lot of the current solid state drives come with immature firmware and controllers. This should improve dramatically by the time Wii 2 comes out. Games can be released on read-only solid state cards.

There is speculations that one of the next gen consoles will be coming out with the upcoming Intel GPU. That processor is going to be x86 based, so it can work as both a CPU and a GPU. And developers know how to code for x86 processors.

Well, Zoyx, one thing to point out is that during that time that R&D skyrocketed, they obviously developed the DSi and things like Wii Fit. Not to say that they aren’t working on something huge, but I’m sure a lot of those dollars were spent on those.

My greatest fear of any next-gen console? Online purchase only games. What happens in 20 years when I want to play Mario Galaxy 14? Will I still be able to? With no physical medium in your ownership, if they pull the plug, that’s it. We’re already starting to see that on all 3 consoles (and the PC too).

    1) Allow users to back up downloaded content to physical media. 2) The ability to transfer downloaded content to another console, if the first one bricks. 3) Sell what you download.

I can see them doing the first two, but not the last one.

I hadn’t thought of that third one. I suppose it would be like DRMing music really.
