Wii update v4.2 is available. General consensus is: don’t update. They replaced the bootloader, and there are reports that this is buggy. Buggy as in “bricking your Wii” buggy. The main focus of this update was to go after mods and homebrews. So those applications get wiped-out during this update. The homebrew community has already updated, so v4.2 has been pretty much rendered useless. It is the people that have unmodded Wiis that are being inconvenienced the most.

I did my 4.2 update yesterday without issue. However, I am running an un-modded system.
Yeah, I think I’ll wait.
I had to in order to buy something from the store. I figure it’s probably only really affecting people who modded. Took a gamble and did it. The update took longer than normal, but it worked famously. I also did my upgrade through a hardwired connection rather than Wi-Fi.
Don’t you mean WyFy… oh, wait, they didn’t re-spell that one.
A coworker urged me to hack my Wii (1 cube down from Cloudscout, 2 cubes away and across the aisle from me) (and gave me a bunch of utilities to do that. Not realizing that the 4.2 update broke everything having to do with Homebrew software, I blithely waded into the modding world (after updating my console) and had very little success. Once I realized that I shouldn’t have updated, I tuned into some of the modding sites and observed the genesis of the adapted hacks to work around the new update as they came out. Those guys are pretty schmart…
I was able to get it working with the new guides and admit that it’s very cool. I love being able to rip my games to HDD and play them from there.
I just can’t do it. I’m a wuss. I have so many consoles and DVD players I really don’t have a need for it. I admit it’s cool. I’m just very cautionary when it comes to this stuff.
I was too, at least about the Wii. Then I realized that I barely ever use it and it might be fun to fiddle with it again. Since there’s no case cracking involved, I was emboldened…
