I got sick over the weekend. I’m not sure with what but I suspect salmonella. But before I started to get sick I made a trip to Radio Shack and bought a Cold Heat wireless soldering tool and some solder with the intent of fixing my Arcade Tron Cocktail‘s player 1 joystick.

Tron Control Panel

For a long time now, I’ve been the only one that can get the high score on the machine partly due to the fact that the trigger on the player one joystick is completely worn out. It took a certain finesse to get the stick to respond properly. The difficulty with the cocktail version of Tron is that the parts are just not readily available. Especially the unique joystick. There are very few machines that share the short, Pac-Man style stick with a trigger on the front. Machines that I know of that share this type of joystick are:

  • Tron (Cocktail)
  • Satan’s Hollow (Cocktail)
  • Solar Fox (Cabaret and Cocktail)

I recently scoured the internet again looking for parts and was lucky enough to find a set of Satan’s Hollow control panels for a cocktail machine! Ironically, they were at Quarter Arcade, which is where I scored the original Tron cocktail arcade control panels 5 years ago.

Tron Joystick Profile

The Satan’s Hollow control panel is slightly different than a tron control panel It has no spinner, in it’s place there is a single yellow arcade button and its joysticks only move right and left. I didn’t need the whole mechanism–just the stick with the trigger. I had the joystick off the Satan’s Hollow and onto the Tron control panel in minutes. My new soldering iron worked like a champ too! Now the Tron is almost 100%. The only thing I need now is a replacement battery for the motherboard. I think I’ll try and get that done this week. As for the game play, I look forward to my friends now being able to play without complaining about the player one side being an issue.

Once a week [for three weeks now] we’ve given you the weekly segment:  Stuff You Didn’t Know You Needed (or SYDKYN!)  This week is no exception and we’ve dig dug deep.  We know it’s June and thought you might want to get a head start on All Hallows Eve this year.  You’re thinking to yourself right now, “Boy, I wish I had a cool retro-arcade costume with a carefully placed joystick so I could attract the ladies toward my netherregions …”  Oh no…

Video ArcadeI am now a member of the Video Arcade Preservation Society.  I registered my Ms. Pac-Man and Tron Arcade machines.  VAPS is managed by KLOV.com and has been around since 1990 (before the internets was big!) There is an extensive listing of members and games.  You may list your arcade collections, whether of not your machines as “for sale” or “not for sale” and invite visitors to your collection.  You can browse member lists, check out their collection sizes and if you feel like it (and where allowed)–you can go visit their collections.

Neo Geo SNKThis is relatively old news but with Virgin Media’s recent announcement for the release of SNK’s Arcade Classics Volume One in the UK, I decided to see what I had missed over at Amazon. Turns out it’s been out in the U.S. since April! Why am I not informed better of these things?

Many of us may think SNK was only known for their Baseball Stars series and other sports games. However, if memory serves–they also had a history of releasing some pretty good platformers and top down scrollers–both in the arcade and on consoles. I think my association of SNK and baseball must stem from not being able to escape the 900 million copies I seem to stumble upon at every used gaming store across the U.S.

SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 includes the following titles available on PlayStation 2, PSP and the Wii:

  1. Art of Fighting
  2. Baseball Stars 2
  3. Burning Fight
  4. Fatal Fury
  5. King of the Fighters ’94
  6. King of the Monsters
  7. Last Resort
  8. Magician Lord
  9. Metal Slug
  10. Samurai Showdown
  11. Neo Turf Masters
  12. Sengoku
  13. Shock Troopers
  14. Top Hunter
  15. Super Sidekicks 3
  16. World Heroes

I’m not sure you need a Wii to get the full glory of these games and so if you have an old PS2 (or a PS3 for that matter) you may want to pick up the cheaper option at Amazon:

Wii: $29.99
PSP: $26.99
PS2: $13.99
